Give us the background - when and why did you decide to open a record shop?
I opened the shop back in 2000, which started as a market stall. I had always wanted to run my own record shop and decided to go for it.
It was either that or stop thinking about it!
Tell us a bit about your shop. What’s the vibe?
We have two shops (one in Carmarthen, the other in Swansea) and we sub let a room in Hay-on Wye too. We do new and second hand CD’s and vinyl.
Our Swansea shop is a cafe as well as a record shop. We cater to the fringes - and sometimes extremes of music whilst also not being snobbish! We make an effort to cater for all music tastes.
Can you remember the first record you sold in your shop?
The first record was a Lauent Garnier LP and the last was Bob Dylan - Shadow Kingdom.
Do you remember your first visit to a record shop? Did you pick up any records?
Buffalo or Spillers in cardiff. My first LP was Squeeze - Cool For Cats
What is your favourite record shop (apart from your own!)
It’s gotta be Spillers. I have many fond memories of hanging out there on my Saturday afternoons.
What’s your most memorable record store experience?
Honestly? Probably some of the Record Store Day instores I’ve done over the years.
How successful has Record Store Day been for your store?
It’s been excellent. We‘ve really had some great fun over the years, met some great people and sold lots of records!
Huw Stephens also broadcast live from the Tangled Parrot store in Swansea, ahead of Record Store Day 2024, playing some titles straight from vinyl. He was joined by double Welsh Music Prize-winning band Adwaith, who put on a great acoustic set.
